I've seen several examples of decorative plaiting along the length of a wrought/black iron tiller (like in the picture below which I saw on a boat being repaired/restored in my local boatyard) and I thought I'd like to have a go myself. Does anyone know of a book/site which tells you how to do it?

Try a google for " coachwhipping" "Grafting" or "Cockscombing" Hervey Garret Smith's The Marlinspike sailor or Ashley's book of knots should help.

Get hold of Ashley's Book of Knots. Easily the best! But I did one of these- admittedly only 8 passes long but it was quite easy with patience and LOTS of bivi-cord! It's not too dissimilar to a length of braid-on-braid mantle, if you look at it.
