Places to keep a 50-65\' boat near Nice

Instead of a holiday house, we are tossing up the idea of getting a Fleming to keep on the Med. Idea is to use it for cruising and also just as holiday accommodation.

Needs to be kept close to transport and Nice airport is easiest. Are there good, secure moorings for a large yacht there that would be available is is it impossible to get into a good marina?

A Fleming isn't a "large yacht" down there :-)

Loads of moorings, literally thousands, and all in nice locations and secure, but most are as you hint not available. The best way is to buy one, but going rate for that size berth is €375k in Antibes (one of the nicest ports) and perhaps €200k in St Laurent du Var (perhaps the least nice, tho perfectly ok)

Renting is possible but you have no security of tenure. You dont rent from big marina companies like MDL, as you would in UK. The berths are nearly all privately owned, so you are renting from a private individual (even if you're dealing with the capitainerie and dont ever meet your true landlord) and that person can just decide they want the berth back

There are a few rental berths avaialble occasionally, but you'll need a bit of luck. Best to visit and befriend the port people. Email or telephone requests will be replied to with "no sorry we're full". AFAIK none of the ports operate transparent waitlists

Ports within easy drive to Nice airport are (west to East) La Rague, La Napoule, Cannes old port, Port Canto Cannes, Golfe Juan/Camille Rayon, Gallice, Antibes, Baie des Anges, SLDV, Nice itself, Beaulieu, St Jean and Cap D'Ail

Depends if you want to buy or rent. Most of the berths are purchased, not rented, so availability is limited for annual contracts. You may find somewhere in St Laurent du Var, or could try Garavan, nr Menton, as they seem to always have space available.

If you want to purchase a long lease then different story, there are berths available in nearly all the marinas as far as I know, its only a case of what you're prepared to pay.

How about Genoa, I hear there are berths at the aiport marina there?

flying direct to genoa from the UK? nightmare, unless you want to go from stansted which is not much cop if you live tother side of the smoke.

I'd give a few of the brokers a ring for a short term let to get the feel, Tigress, Inwards, Triangle etc, might get lucky.

...though Garavan dioesn't fit the spec so far as easy travel is concerned. It is right on the Italy border, past Monaco, so 1hr+ from Nice airport and €150 taxi fare

There's also Marina di Verazza which I understand still has berths available both for rent and for sale but as you say, it must be 1 1/2 - 2 hrs from Nice airport. Much closer to Genoa though
Btw I've never managed to get a definitive answer to this but is it the Gulf of Genoa more windy than the Cote d'Azur?

the times I have been there it was less, NW which is a predominant wind does not affect much especiially the Tigullio gulf South East to it
the Easterlies which are predominant in Autumn in the med, have a big effect on Genova tough
may be you should send the question to the Italian gentlemen who has an Aicon 64 and keeps it in Varazze or Savona who posts a few times around here
