Places to go on tidal thames

Hi,

It will soon be time to get out and about for me and the family (wife and 2 teenagers). We are based in St Kats are looking for places to visit overnight (short trips 2 - 3 hours if possible).

We did about 10 years on the upper thames ending about 4 years ago.
Sometimes we go to chelsea for an overnight.
Have been to Ramsgate a few times in the past.
Last year we explored Medway (a bit!)..
Have wandered around limehouse a few times as can walk it from St Kats :-)
Have asked at Canary Wharf basin but they told me they discourage private boats, plus costs an arm and leg to get through the lock ..nice.
Gallions looks ...er how can i say this

But i am a bit stumped now..am looking at trying South Dock for an overnight (just cos i havent been there by boat)

Question is .. am i missin something ? anything on the north shore worth trying? anyone know of any hidden gems? We are a 45ft princess flybridge.
 
I have yet to do the tidal part (on the list for this year).

We went to Canary Wharf before xmas and was walking around looking at all the little areas of water and wondered if you could get into those places by boat. Just had a quick look on google earth and saw what looks like the lock you mentioned on it.
Seems a shame if you are discouraged from using that area, as from memory I remember thinking it would be nice to explore that area on boat as it had a few bars and restaurants there

Martin,

If you are looking for mooring overnight, then try a new marina which has been built in Chelsea.

Also, last weekend when were were on the rib, we stopped in a marina next to Tower Bridge (between Tower Bridge and Greenwich; less than 100m away from TB). They have visitors' mooring.


Also, try Greenwich Yacht club.
 
I have always fancied doing the Thames Ring in RIB!

Head up river to Brenford, hop on the Grand Union Canal and back out at Limehouse!

Could be a good laugh with a beer or two in Camden!

Alternatively Ramsgate might be a bit more of a trip to aim for after a few smaller runs.

Burnham similarly could be a nice run.

We are going in West India Dock over easter weekend, problem is the sheer size of the lock they are bit reluctant to dump several million gallons of water into the river unless they have at least a half dozen boats in order to make it worthwhile.

The new place at Chelsea is Imperial Wharf Marina: http://www.imperialwharfmarina.co.uk/. They welcome short stay visitors and the Piermaster, Colin, is a nice guy. There are a few places to eat / drink on the doorstep.

You could also try Limehouse and have a beer in the Cruising Association HQ bar (they're very welcoming to visitors) or the Grapes in Narrow St. Gallions Point is an interesting place for a stopover, but no pubs or restaurants nearby.
 
Thanks, did a bit of googling last night and found it there, and also saw your review. Had a bit of email correspondence with Colin as well and seems like a nice friendly helpful chap. Overnight stays work out to be £4.00 per metre incl. VAT and you can buy a leccy card for the pontoon power. Seems to be a few nice bars and restaurants at Imperial Wharf and I think a supermarket not too far a walk along the river as well.

Thanks for the reply's I think I found all those places except the marina 100mts to Tower Bridge (unless thats St Kats) which is where are berthed :-)

OG - we ran down to the Medway can remember the name of the Marina but it had a shopping mall nearby. Very nice, but with fuel bill of £800 for the w/e it didnt seem worth it.. (just typing that reminds me the bottom needs a clean)...Interested to hear more about West India Dock ...cant go easter but would like to go sometime...how much is the lock in/out and the stay in the marina?

CJL - Dont think i would get a Princess 45 round the Grand Uniion Canal due to bridge height, but i could be wrong?

Have done Limehouse, Ramsgate, and Burnham.

Will definately have a look at Greenwich yacht club, hadnt realised you could stop there..

That sounds great . The tidal bit was always a bit pants when i was moored there and the trips into london and back where a slog .
Over night for that price close to the kings road is a bargin to park the bed up !

The lock can be operated as a full lock, half lock or quarter lock. You can see the various lock gates in the overhead pictures posted. I've gone through it in all three modes.

Charges have just gone up from £20 to £50, for movements outside of +- 1hr high water Woolwich. Within +- 1hr free to berth holders.
 
I'm interested to hear more about what the tidal Thames has to offer, I was only the other day looking at Canary Wharf etc on Google Earth.

I'm doing Paris from the Channel Islands this Easter by rib and thought London would be a great way to follow that up in 2012.
