I recently installed some fender baskets on the OUTSIDE of my rails, thus giving me more deck space and stopping people onboard from walking into them. Everything was great until someone asked why I'd put them on the outside and then asked me if they cause a problem when negotiating locks etc......OOPS, that was not something I considered. As the baskets are now the widest past of the boat does anyone forsee any other situations where they could potentially be a problem?

I can understand why you have them on the outside but can't you just move them up a bit to the pointy end where it's narrower and won't be the widest dimension. It would certainly be a problem in the Med where we are stern to and all rammed against each other.

Rafting could be an issue especialy if the other boat has a higher freeboard thaqt yours. They may object to your fender baskets wearing holes in their boat!

They came as standard on our boat.
SWMBO's in charge in that department and I dont think she's ever used them.
As HLB says - they just obscure the view.
Much better to find a locker

Or do as everyone in the Med seems to do - let them hang over the side (I didnt mean that - really)

I deliberately never mounted them at the pointy end because of the blind spot issue when underway. I guess another problem could occur when she gets lifted out with the straps....It seems that a switch to the inside is inevitable. Peter, may I suggest that if all you can muster is a terse three words then maybe it would be best if you refrain from bothering to reply at all. I apologies if the question wasn't sufficiantly highbrow for you, maybe next time it will be more along the lines of the changing characteristics of the opposing forces of the centre of buoyancy and gravity for a lateral shift in weight, such as bilge water, on a displacemet hull.
