Hi all,
I am recently retired,after 50 years of
being a motor technician.and decided I would get myself a little boat and outboard.
Cut a long story short, the motor was laid up for a while, said the previous owner, and wouldn’t start,I got it home, and run a few checks and found no compression.
I thought happy days head off now I am baffled ,and don’t want to take a hammer to anything that vaguely look like aluminium.
Pleas could someone tell me how I get the barrel off.
The engine is a little Mariner 3.3 .
I would appreciate your help and advice very much.
Regards
Daryl
Excuse me if I have posted in the wrong area.

barrel? Not sure what you mean. Most outboards have a bottom end (albeit not actually at the bottom as the engine is on its side) that can be removed to access the crankshaft and facilitate removal of pistons.

With a two stroke, lack of compression can also be caused by worn crankcase seals. There is one at the tip, and one at the bottom.

Sorry hit the send button.
This engine is a single cylinder, and it’s horizontal, yes it does lay on its side,
I am attaching a couple of photos that might better explain what I am trying to say.
Photo 1 is the piston (cylinder head removed) photo 2 is the bottom end of the engine with carburettor removed photo 3 is the cylinder assembly bolted down.
I hope that gives you some idea of what I am trying to do.
Kind regards and stay safe.
