Thinking of doing some RYA courses during this year prior to getting my boat next year. Have a fair bit of tidal river experience but very little coastal.

Anyroadup - Is it better for me to do my training in the area I intend to use the boat, ie south coast of England or would it be perfectly OK to fly down and do it somewhere sunny on the med a la Sun Coast?

I am told that the solent et al is tidal (surprise, surprise!) and that the med is considered non-tidal, hence my question.

I may even forgive Sun Coast his anti-targa prejudice if his courses are well-priced! :)

Any other opinions welcome!

i did a suncoast YM recently, recommended. It actually is tidal, hence you don't get a non-tidal limitation to whatever course you do.

Not sure how recommended it is that you use and get examined in the same area? If you evidently know the area the instructor is likely to be less forgiving, perhaps? In any case, part of the idea of the RYA courses are that you'd be ok entering unfamiliar ports, not that you can enter the port provided you've been there ten times already.

Sounds good to me.

At the moment I don't really know the Solent area either from a wet point of view as I haven't bought a boat yet so I don't suppose it will matter where I do the course.

Sounds good - I'm not a targa guy yet - no point buying until I move down south at the end of the year - maybe I'll get seduced in the meantime and buy a gin-palace! NOT! :D

I'll have a look at my schedule and sort out some possible dates later in the year - maybe we can convert him if we both go at once!

I'll PM you my e-mail and have a nose round your website.

There will be two of us doing the course - my mate and business partner and I are buying the boat between us - he doesn't want anything to do with the driving or nav side of it but I've insisted he does the courses just in case I keel over!

Let me know which courses you think we should do and rough costs and we'll sort out a date later in the year.
