Came back to mooring today having only left Sat morning to find the dinghy (East Coast old faithful number 32) only just floating. Stupidly I had left the plastic 5 litre petrol can in boat and that had gone but the oars were still secure under the seat.

I know it rained on Saturday but not that much! Presumably something too close or too fast or too much wash!

First time it has happened - anyone got any ideas - maybe just more buoyancy?

Yep. There was a seal about this weekend. It tried to get into my grp tender while it was tied behind the boat, and I was in the cockpit. Bloody great thing, I thought it was going to sink it! However, as I shot off my seat (spilling my beer) he obviously was as alarmed as I was, and retired to a dingy a couple of boats away, where he stayed for a couple of hours.

Almost certainly a seal - we had this happen to us oon the Stour a few years back, twice in one night - I thought we had someone clambering into the dinghy(it was dark at the time) but swamped the dinghy, so bailed out and tied alongside and it was full of water by morning!
