I must admit going dead to windward in 25 knots of 4 degrees centigrade wind, while wearing nothing waterproof does have it's attractions.

Also the first time I've been on a boat that sports a funnel for the central heating.

I wonder whether those hudded, oilskinned figures crouched in their cockpits appreciated our cheery, shirt-sleeved waves as we crunched past?

... even a stinkie which passed thro the submarine gate at portsmuff a couple of minutes afterwards (lunchtime on sunday) and looked to be doing quite well at +20kn. Two of the crew were on the open flybridge (too much water coming over the bows to see from downstairs?) and had usual rictus grin, white knuckles and very wet ....

Two Storey YOT

We chose the weather well for a demonstration of two storey comfort. Shame we could not use the terrace and the deckchairs - for that we do need global warming.

Another advantage of a boat with a poop deck must be the view from the back bedroom picture windows, on waking. Beats breakfast telly.

Not that I got anywhere near the back bedroom of course, that had been baggsied by the time I got there. At least I didn't have to sleep in the cockpit locker, like Parahandy, though.

You\'ve read the book ... now see the movie!

Chris, Doug, Ken, John: email me humperdinck@zylab.com and I'll send you the video (< 1 MB) ...

I'd never sailed in a pilot house boat before, and now I'll never sail in such cold weather without one. Never. Open cockpits are for masochists in 3 deg C before extreme windchill. That was PURE LUXURY.

I can also vouch for Chris Robb knowing a thing or two about handling long keel boats in close quarters in a wind. That, and I've seen many powerboaters enter slips at slower speeds ;)
