I have a Pilot Gas alarm as per the following pic....

Whenever I switch on the 12v supply it alarms for 1 minute or so then goes off. Any idea what could be causing this? We don't use the gas that we have onboard.

The alarm sounding when energised is a self test although on new units it was for a shorter period of time.
You can test operation with a gas from a cigarette lighter.

When mine's working, it bleeps a self test for up to 30 seconds then a different beep for each of the two sensors to show that they are working. When it's been off for a while (a few days or more) it does the 30 second beeping then sounds long beeps with the fault light showing. I have to keep turning it off then on again for up to 15 minutes (depending on how long it hasn't been used for) before it starts to behave. Not ideal if I want it to detect a gas leak when I get on board!

When in regular use such as cruising then it behaves OK. It just doesn't like being switched off for long periods. If I was replacing it, I'd buy a different one.

Mine’s the same. We have learnt to switch it on as soon as we arrive and then do stuff on deck till it finishes screaming

Mine won't stop screaming unless it's turned off/on so I don't know when it has finished having its tantrum. I have installed a dedicated push button so each time I pass whilst getting the boat ready I can quickly try resetting it. Before installing the button, I had to keep turning the battery off and on.
