Hi all,

Been getting the wee Vivacity 20 foot sail boat onto it's new home at Pwllheli pile moorings. One thing that seems a bit concerning is the way the ring on the bar seems to jam, effectively trying to sink the boat! Ok it's probably me being a bit dramatic, and the ring does seem to shift with a wave or two.

I notice that a few of the other yachts have bouys attached to the mooring line/shackle - anyone know if that's "best practise" or am I being a bit paranoid! :D

Btw not too happy about the guy in the mooring upstream - he or she has a shxt load of rope hanging about, will be talking to the harbour master about it, see if he can get a tidy up organised... (Will be putting thimbles on the mooring ropes too)

Inwould think that the ring should slide up and down the bar without too much friction. It is conceivable that a pull upwards at an angle might tend to jamb a bit more so a buoy tied to the ring might try to keep the ring up levle with the water level. You really want all the load on the mooring line to be in the tethering direction. Has your neighbour in fact got old plastic oil containers to do just that? good luck olewill

I have to say that none of the lines shown in your photo are really up to the task! I have a pile mooring on the Hamble and the HM issues requirements for the moorings e.g. minimum line size, all with moused shackles on the ring, no stainless to be used. One of the lines shown is tied to a shackle, which may well be temporary, but can be expected to wear quickly and be of only half its original strength. The other, with an eye, hardly seems to have any security, no splice or whipping. Your neighbours cat's cradle of light line is just an accident waiting to happen and the chances are it'll will be your boat moored by its prop.

Yes I'm going to put a thimble on in the next week, the shackle is moused (other side). The old rope is a spliced loop with whipping to keep the thimble in. I've used 18mm nylon - I would have thought that would be thick enough? :o
I agree about my neighbours tangled nest - I tied it all back on itself but I'm going to ask the harbour master to have a word....
