Following on from some threads on Winter boating, I thought you might like to see these. I went out in a F5/6 Easterly which should give reasonable seas in Porthmadog, and being Easterly it comes off over the land and over the Snowdonia Mountains, which are the backdrop to two of the pictures. As it happens, the sea was quite rough - but look at that sky!! Seriously, it was more blue than you get in any summer, but equally it was damn cold. There were a few pints of Murphys drunk in the yacht club that evening...

Here's me on the Windy just before we set off. This piccy is facing up into the harbour at Porthmadog.

I took this one for a friend of mine who is an amatuer (but excellent) artist. He wanted a picture of the fairway bouy (3 miles from harbour) with the mountains as backdrop. Dead ahead in the picture from the fairway, is Mt. Snowdon.

The sea was quite rough in parts and this is difficult to convey in small pictures, this one gives some idea of wind strength as the wind was blowing the wake back across itself. It makes a great piccy in my opinion...

Re: Winter boating in my home port

Hi Dave.
Impressed with the pics. excellent clarity. I work around Wales nearly everyweek Including Angelesy & Fairbourne so I am not surprised it was cold out there as it has been on my last few visits. Incidentally it was beutifull on Windermere on sunday.

Yes, suprisingly clear given that the Windy was pitching around all over the place when we drew up to the fairway to take the pictures. Trying to keep the camera still was a bugger to say the least!

Nice pics Dave.

I've found it myself that when you try and photograph what seems like 6ft waves, with the boat rolloing at all angles, when you see the piccy, it looks more like a gentle 2ft 6 of swell!

Hi Ian,

As a real live Windermere boater, I take that you, along with others, are lobbying to reverse the decision of the LDNPA re the 10mph speed limit.

In all seriousness, what will you and others do if that cannot be reversed?

Great pictures that have certainly brightened up a dull evening here.
