I had new shaft anodes fitted by a McDuff agent and relaunched late Jan 07.

I lost three days holiday due to one of the anodes slipping onto my P bracket and needing a diver.

Thankfully I found it before any damage was done but the story doesn't really end there.

After relaunch in Jan I was told by marina staff that my boat needed to be lifted again as there was a fault with the anodes.

I checked and spoke to the Mcduff agent who said no that was a different boat and mine was fine.

You can see from the photo that a machine screw and locking washer is absent and a nut and bolt has been used.
The diver was sure no locking washer was used.
The bolt was too long and it has been hacked/ground off.........my experience this always loosens a nut.

That anode has then slipped back and started to wear against the P bracket.

Anodes were brand new as were the cutlass bearings renewed at the same time.

I showed the anodes to the Mc duff agent who says it should not have been bodged like that and the person who did it is no longer in their employment.

End of story however

I am not confrontational and I dont want to fall out with a good engineer but I feel he should have offered to pay for a lift and new anodes fitted at his expense or do you think I am being too pedantic ?

I dont need a summer scrub but I could book one and ask him politley to put two new anodes on ?

There was only one with a known fault, the other I had taken off as I didnt trust it after the other one had failed.

Why do you need shaft anodes, are the shafts not bonded internally to the hull anodes?
Serious question, cos I have never really understood why they are used.

Excellent question !

One forum member with a P360 has never used them.

My shafts are bonded but the anodes have eroded in 6 months.

Sometimes they slip of their own accord sometimes they are knocked by debris.

I use shaft brushes and shaft anodes but I always put a stainless jubilee above and below it on the shaft to stop it riding up or slipping down . The jubilee needs to be fitted with the tail trailing when the boat is running ahead.

I have had experiences with shaft brushes where you think they are working and they arent, better belt and braces its cheaper than a new prop.

We have never had Shaft Anodes fitted to our P360. Curious really, looked at quite a lot of other boats on the hard this spring, Princess's particularly in our boat yard ( Big un !) and very few had them fitted. Ocassionally I saw them fitted, but if you don't need them its a bit ' belt & braces' , especially if some twit fits them badly! Did you ever establish if they should be fitted ? Ours is 11yrs young, and no signs of corrosion , and she is checked annually. Did you try the POC?
Cheers
Bob.

The shaft anodes will loosen as they erode, I believe that some owners put a large cable tie above and below the shaft instead of the Jubilee clips.
We have shafts on our Prestige 36 and have no shaft anodes, but we do use cone anodes on the end of the props.
The shafts will not corrode in preference to the props as they are less reactive, ie Less "Noble", then the props and as such it's the props that need the protection.
