Well, we went out as far as Cowes, more or less. There wasn't much wind, the light wasn't very good, and we only saw Gallivant, Priddy's Moody 376, which I did manage some pictures of, sailing briskly to windward. We were returning to Haslar by then having decided to call it a day.

I did take photos of any yacht within the range of my 400mm lens. Which surprisingly wasn't very many. We were early for the west-going tide, but hoped to meet boats coming from the western Solent.

Never mind, we can always plan another attempt.

It is now 3pm, we have only just tied up and the sky seems to be lightening, so maybe I have missed the best of the day. I am sure somebody will let me know /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I am going to attempt to put my photos on Shmoo's Boatpix site, hopefully with his assistance. So look there to see if you were in my lens site today

Well I was there, from about 1130 to 1330. Even arranged a Red Arrows fly past, and a sail-past by the Waverly. Saw no-one. Heard Isabelle trying to call Cornish Maid on 77. Tried to call both myself. Nothing. I would be bitterly disappointed, but I had a cracking sail as the wind got up nicely at 1300 or so off Castle Point, enough to get the rail under anyway.
Looking forward to seeing your pictures Becky - I've uploaded four, but I doubt it's anyone from here unless you happen to own the Waverly.

Anyone there around 12 - 1300 should have seen the Red Arrows, a largish container vessel 'towing' a Southampton tug and the Waverly paddle steamer. Oh yes, and a Corribee. Anyone see any of those?

Re: Photographic attempt in Solent today -Nab Tower leaning?

Saw the Red Arrows, a lot of spring tide plus lots of competitors for the Island SC's Nab Tower race. A great race but a bit spoiled by a large hole in the wind just before the Nab and again between Bembridge Ledge and Browndown. Looks like the Nab is starting to tilt a bit - the concrete apron seems higher once side than the other. Anyone else noticed an Pisa tendencies?

[/ QUOTE ] Its always been tilted. 3 or 4 degrees depending on where you are reading about it.

Re: Photographic attempt in Solent today -Nab Tower leaning?

It's not the tower that leans. There is a peculiar tidal anomaly that makes the sea a bit unlevel at that point. It makes your boat slide downhill towards the tower before you know it.

In my experience of that end of the Solent it is actually uphill whichever way you are going.

Sailed through Osborne Bay after lunch by which time wind had piped up a bit. Hands too busy to do VHF call, so just sailed by. Couldn't recognise any forumites with our without sails/cameras - had you all pushed off by then?

I have uploaded one piccie of a Sadler called "Affair" although with my ageing camera "Afar" might have been more apposite!

What a shame. We were there, listening on Ch 77, but all we heard was the racing guys setting up their race starts.

We had a deck mike which had an accident during our holiday, but I was below listening quite a lot of the time. I also had an HH VHS, but heard nothing on that.

I will admit to be surprised to not hear anyone. Still, I wouldn't have been the only one with a camera. Hopefully some of tyou will have pics of each other, which was the object of the exercise.

Now to put my results on Smoo's site, this afternoon.

I did my bit for the photographic mission but wasn't in the Solent, was sailing around Sovereign Harbour in Eastbourne. It's never very busy there and the only boat that came anywhere near us was a Hanse, "Dot Calm". They saw me taking photographs of them and waved but I have no idea who they were and if they will ever know to look for their photographs on Schmoo's site (I uploaded them there). If anyone knows who they are, could you let them know.

If anyone around Eastbourne ever sees our boat, Chellers, under sail, we would LOVE some photographs. It's a catamaran with green trim so should be reasonably easy to spot.

Perhaps next time it would be worth setting out with some knowledge of what other people are sailing, boat name, sail number and all that jazz.
I don't know why my vhf was so useless, I too was listening to the ISC Nab race chatter without any problem, but only heard one forumite calling you, from a boat called Isabelle.

Edit - just uploaded a screenshot of my GPS track, just to show where I was, or is it to prove I was really there!

Re obtaining nice photos of your own boat - another method, if you are confident about your MOB drill, would be to cast off one of the crew in the dinghy and then sail up and down while said crew snaps away furiously....... we have often done this, and have obtained some reasonably nice photos as a result.

Hi, this is a great idea but unfortunately the only applicable member of the crew we could cast off in the dinghy who's not doing anything else is the dog and I'm not sure what her camerawork is like. I find it very difficult getting into a dinghy (I'm disabled) and Mr Chellers is the one who knows how to sail the boat...

Still I have hopes that one day Chellers will appear on yourboatpix.com

Well, yes, so am I and it's my site! I keep dropping hints about when I am going out, but no good yet.

Well, you were very loud and clear - presumably not a hand held. Am I right in thinking that yours is not a saily type boat?
