Phonetic for \'@\' ...?

When you see a commercial ship mid ocean, a VHF chat sometimes leads to an offer to send in a position report to family via their email system.

However the IMO/NATO Phonetic Alphabet has no provision for "@", which makes relay of email addresses difficult...

Any suggestions??

oooh no - an ampersand is the "and" symbol - "&".

The correct name is a "commercial at".

From wikipedia:
In Israel @ is often referred to as a "strudel"; in Dutch, a "apenstaart" (monkey tail); in German, a "Klammeraffe"; in Italian a "chiocciola"; in French, "arrobase" or "a commercial"; in Slovenian, "afna". Sometimes it is called a monkey because it looks like a monkey with its tail wrapped around it. It has the official name commercial at in the ANSI/CCITT/Unicode character encoding standards.

So it probably depends on the ship you're talking to...

That's right - edit your post so mine doesn't make sense! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hey everyone - blond Cliff thought it was an ampersand! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Incidentally I've just looked further down the wikipedia article & there's a huge list of names for the sign in different languages (including morse), but nothing for the phonetic alphabet. Nor, unusually for wikipedia, a translation to Klingon...

[/ QUOTE ] But did you know that the & symbol originated in telegraphy and the morse code?

The word 'and' is ._ _. _.. in morse (more usually spoken as didah, dahdit, dahdidit)

The & symbol is sent as . ... (dit dididit) which is 'e' 's' and is a lot faster and less effort to send. Even easier when telegraphy operators used 'bug' keys which generated the dits automatically.

If you look carefully the symbol & is made up of an 'e' and an 's'.

I believe the & symbol is actually a combination of E and T for "et" which means "and" in Latin (as in "et tu Brute" - my entire latin vocabulary). In some of the more elaborate scripts the T (actually a lower case celtic style t) is easily visible, though it is reversed for artistic reasons.

Unfortunately that is a bad example. "Et" in that case means "even". Caesar is saying that in the last moment, even his best friend has turned against him. A mere "and" would not make much sense.

Also I am not convinced that its what an ampersand is anyway... Is this another example of Wikipedia publishing drivel and claiming some sort of academic status.

However I may be wrong as well as I have looked for a reference for my telegraphy etymology, but so far without results.

However I can say with confidence that 'es' in Morse is still the shorthand Morse for 'and' though, and its usually written '&'.
