Interesting call this morning from the Watch Officer at Solent Coastguard. It went something like this:

CG: Mr Worrall are you the owner of a boat called Ocean Star?

Me: Yes

CG: Where is Ocean Star? I don't suppose you are on board?

Me: Chichester Marina and yes I am on board.

CG: We have just received a voice Mayday from Ocean Star somewhere in the Solent.

Me: I can confirm that Ocean Star is afloat in Chi Marina and that the VHF is switched off. I think you may have an imposter.

CG: Thank you, we thought it might be a false call and immediately challenged but without response.

It is nice to see that the CG66 system works and that CG remain vigilant in the face of cuts to the service.

Richard.

Tough if there was another Ocean Star out there in trouble, altho it sounds like the call content must have raised suspicions anyway.

Thats exactly what I thought.. What if there was another boat called Ocean Star out in the Solent in a genuine mayday situation??????

I am sure from the tone of my conversation with the Watch Officer that they were simply eliminating a known Ocean Star. They suspected a hoax but I am equally sure that they wouldn't close the case until they had proven that there was nobody in real trouble.

I was told last week, there are a couple of repeating hoax caller at the moment, they are trying to track down.

I was on the water today when SG broad cast a Seelonce Fenee to this vessel . I was out a week ago when yet another false alert was put out.

This post prompted me to review the details I've registered on the CG66 system.

I knew I'd changed by mobile phone number recently, but I'd forgotten that I'd bought a DSC VHF, changed the colour of my deck paint, changed the colour of my antifoul, bought new (different colour) lifejackets and moved marina since I registered! Oops....

Thanks for the prompt.

That doesn't compute Solitaire! If "to" or aimed at the vessel, a seelonce perhaps, but surely not a seelonce feenee? :D
