phantom 43/warranty

I have had a few conversations with the Marine Sales brokers about the 2 remaining phantom 43s they have for sale. they lost their fairline dealership a year ago or so but still had a block of 2003 models to sell. they haven't sold all of them yet, and some are now over 12m old. While the prices they will do a deal on these boats seem ok (15% off list and counting), its bugging me about whether there will be any decent aftersales service. they of course assure that it will, but with their stretched financials (I downloaded it from companies house) I worry that if they go out of business then i am knackered on warranty claims etc. Does anyone have any views on 1) if I buy a "new" boat but it is a 2003 model, when does the fairline warranty and the volvo warranty start and end 2) are marine sales going to stick around (they get v bad pres son here) and 3) how risky is it generally to do this sort of a deal. I know its better than buying a second hand boat but this is going to be reflected in the price I would have to pay for the boat. thanks.

AFAIK the Volvo warranty starts on first sale to public. Ours did - the wty cards were dated the day we got the boat last month even tho the engines were delivered to Fairline around October 03 ish

The Fairline wty might be the same. Ask them?

The 15% off doesn't seem great for an old model. Peters offer 10% ish off on new boats.

Anything you got from Co House will be very out of date, but if your suspicions are correct you will not want to pay any more than a token deposit till you get title to the boat

You need to sort the after sales service issue. The boat will almost certainly go wrong, quite a lot. But surely Peters will fix it? We boat a boat from a UK dealer and it's now in France with the a/s support done by the French dealer. So, any dealer should help you. You might get an unimpressive service from Peters but dont worry that's normal it would be the same if you bought the boat from them directly :)

I was tempted by the P43's myself and I thought the discount was more than 15% when you take account of the extras fitted. In theory there could be a problem with warranties because I guess Marine Sales would not be too interested in going out of their way to deal with problems and, if they did go out of business you would'nt have a contract to enforce. The engine warranty will not be a problem but its worth checking with Volvo exactly when the warranty starts - you'll probably need the engine numbers for this. Similarly, the warranty for any other proprietary components should be honoured by the manufacturer but, if you buy the boat, it would be worthwile making doubly sure that the warranty cards are submitted. With regard to the boat itself, I would have thought that Fairline would be sympathetic but again its worthwile talking to their service dept
IMHO, these boats are potentially good buys as used Fairlines are always in demand on the secondhand market - check the price of used P43's against the price of the Marine Sales boats and I guess there's not much difference

Ditto above.

However, I know a chap who did similar with a large Targa from the now defunct Offfshore Marine , he purchased their demonstrator a couple of years ago whilst the Co was still trading. Sold with full Volvo warranties only to find when he traded up a year latter the paperwork did not reflect what he thought he had purchased.

I would check very carefully with Fairline HQ and Volvo as has been said.

If it's any comfort, Marine Sales have been trading for many years (I bought my boat from them in '99) and (technically) they relinquished their Fairline dealership voluntarily.

I'd check that the engine warranties would be honoured (even if Marine Sales went out of business), push hard for 25% discount then take my chances with the aftercare on the boat.

I wouldn't take to much notice of any company accounts unless you know the full picture regarding its complete trading details. Clever companies assets are protected by a trading company who may not look that good on paper. The true situation is only seen if both sets of accounts are looked at together. (Although legally they remain seperate entities).

I see that Essex Boatyards have a 2004 P43 "arriving shortly" and to be sold for £309,950. I'll bet you £20 it's come from Marine Sales.
