Have just seen an item on the BBC South news with pictures of a Fairline Phantom 40 sinking after having hit the Bridge Buoy. It looks like everyone was picked up by the Yarmouth Lifeboat and the CG helicopter.

The report stated that the boat was being delivered from Lymington to Poole - is anyone expecting an arrival in Poole?

According to the BBC webpage it was the SBS boat being delivered to the Channel Islands. They said it sank off Milford on Sea, so it probably hit the North Head buoy.

Now, I have no desire to tempt fate, but how do you hit a bouy if you aren't in fog or darkness. I assume that this bouy would be lit anyway.

If I remember the delivery crew are normally the trainers for the boats .

When you buy a new boat you get a couple of days training...

What an advert for the training...

If it was the Bridge (Needles) then it has what is quite possibly the most ineefectual light I have ever seem, bar Passage Rock off Jersey. As landfall marks they are both particularly feeble. At least the Bridge doesnt have shore clutter behind it.

Notwithstanding that - to hit a navigation mark hard enough to sink a boat is inexcusable - for anyone in a properly equipped boat.

Don't assume anything. I did that. Took the chartplotter as gospel, believed the chart to be true and wrongly thought that a charted bouy as being lit would be. I ended up with a big red stripe down the side of the boat. My Mk 1 eyeball and knowledge of the area said something was wrong. Lesson learn't, won't do that again!

Maybe the autopilot and chart plotter were just a bit too accurate this time.

SOLENT COASTGUARD CO-ORDINATE ASSISTANCE TO TWO CREW OF SINKING CABIN CRUISER

At 6.30 p.m. this evening Solent Coastguard received a mayday call from the two crew of a Fairline 40 who were on their way to deliver the cabin cruiser from Lymington to Weymouth that they had hit the Bridge Buoy in the Needles channel just off the Isle of Wight within the Solent, and were taking water and sinking fast. They reported they required immediate assistance.

`India Juliet’, the Coastguard Rescue Helicopter was immediately scrambled and the Yarmouth All Weather lifeboat was also requested to launch. The Freshwater Lifeboat was also launched.

On scene the two crew were requested to fire off a flare to guide the rescue units to them, and just before 7.00 p.m. the lifeboat reported that both crew were on board their boat and that the damaged vessel was sinking by the bow.

Whilst the rescue helicopter and Freshwater lifeboat monitored the activities, the Yarmouth lifeboat crew then managed to attach a tow to the cruiser and attempted to try and beach the cruiser in the Hurst area. Both of the delivery crew were fortunately reported to be unhurt.

Throughout the day the weather has been a steady north easterly force 3 – 4 in the area, gusting up to force 6 with moderate to rough seas.

It is inexcusable. Bridge stands out like a beacon on the radar and, as you say, they should'nt have been going fast enough at night to sink the boat

There's an excellent photo in today's Metro (a London paper, so not much good for you, I'm afraid...........), of the top of the flybridge poking out of the water (therefore irrefutably, she has sunk) with the Needles in the background. There's then a brochure photo of a Targa underneath the main pic, purporting to be a photo of the boat before she sank. Shoot the Sub Editor, someone!

Re: Phantom 40- a witness (nearly)

Yep, I just saw the London metro pic. It has clearly sunk, just the flybridge dashboard and tip of bow sticking out above the water. Needles lighthouse is in background of pic. The white pvc covers are in place over the flybridge dashboard so it was being driven from downstairs

I can claim to be the last forumite to see her alive. I was at Peters Chichester sunday morning looking at another boat. Parked 2 boats down was a brand new P40. The salesman I was chatting to said it was sold to a Jersey customer and was meant to be delivered already but had been delayed by weather, and so it was leaving that afternoon. The rest is history!

Re: Phantom 40- a witness (nearly)

Me too! My wife showed me the picture at lunchtime.

Clearly sunk with F/B covers on.....Couple of points - who brought up radar and who / why would you rely on radar when the Wx was clear. Was she radar fitted yet?

A friend of mine had a scare this year which might have occurred here. The boat concerned has an auto pilot and plotter/radar display in the saloon with no repeaters up top.

They set everything up and all was well until it got a bit wet/cold etc so they 'retired' below having replaced the f/b covers. All was well until they found that they could not get into the saloon as the door had somehow locked itself closed.....
Yes, you can slow down but have no control on direction until you disengage the autopilot which could be plotting you nicely to the exact buoy position.

Autopilot assisted collision??

I would love to hear what really occurred.

Re: Phantom 40- a witness (nearly)

Not sure what you're suggesting but the MayDay call was logged at 6.30pm so I guess it was dark or at least gloomy in which case they should have been using the radar, assuming one was fitted of course.
