Hi all,

I'm starting to think about my next boat purchase and have had a look at a Fairline Phantom 32 fitted with 2 x 106HP volvo penta diesels, does anyone have any idea what sort of speed I'm likely to get with that combo allowing for the fact that the boat and engines date from the late 1970's?

Any idea of the running costs at cruising speed?

Thanks,

This setup was supposed to do about 14-16knts, however 12knts is more likely probably 10knts now if being realistic. These engines are based on a Nissan unit which is notorious for overheating problems and parts now hard to find. Personaly I would avoid them, but they maybe ok.
There is a Phantom 32 at East Cowes marina with recent AQAD41's(200hp) for £32K, probably a better bet if you require planing performance.

Yes I do mean 2 x 106 - at least that what the broker has it listed as.

Will be used mainly on the River Thames with some coastal work so don't need it to be hugely fast.

So I'm looking at somewhere in the area of 10 to 14 knots from the replies so far, thanks Duncan and Stelican for your quick response (3 minutes!).

I had a friend with this baot and engines AQAD32's I think they were called. Remember he cruised at about 12 knots but boat was happier at around 10. Also remember he had problems getting hold of parts for the engines. Volvo no longer stock the bits I understand.

I think some of the suggested speeds you have been given are pretty optomistic. I once owned a fairline sedan32 which has the same hull as the phantom I believe. This hull is extremely senstive to weight and ours struggled to get on the plane with twin 175 Hp volvos. a realistic cruising speed was only 10 -12 knots with full kit etc on board, so I can't see you getting comparable speeds out of 106's

surely 10 knots is just pushing displacement speed for a hull that length? as such the power should be adequate. quite agree that the next couple of knots could be another issue altogether !

however if it's a well found boat at a keen price it sounds as if it would serve well on the river and the odd foray at 8-9knots plus tide will cover the ground fine too.

I think your expectations are about right - it should be fine for that mix of cruising. We spent most of our time at displacement speeds because the petrol 175's were so thirsty, and for a planing hull - she was actually pretty good. We had a season on the river Severn with it and the hull tracked pretty well at river speeds, although the windage caused a few problems in close quarters, but that's about par for the course.

I have a friend with a Phantom 32 with VP 165 hp engines, not very well maintained, and anything over 12 is a bonus. Pity as I have always liked the design.
In your shoes I would shop around for one that has been re-engined. Possibly a little more expensive, but not much, but worth every penny.

Chris_D,

I haven't come across that one you mention in East Cowes on my searches - sounds interesting, do you know if its on brokerage or private sale, or a web address or phone number by any chance?

Thanks all for you comments, think I'll look for one with bigger engines.

Displacement speed only. 10kn would be my guess. It doesn't really matter on a well maintained boat about the hull, but late 70's engines....mmmm. Take a tip from someone who has bought badly in the past - don't buy badly!

If you can find one with AQAD41's then that would make a good boat brilliant.

Thanks for that - didn't realise you were considering it aswell. Doesn't apper to be on their web site now though so maybe it has gone.
