Two Petzl Ascenders like this:http://www.rockrun.com/products/Petzl-Basic-Ascender.html
These are the basis of the mast climbing system for single handed mast climbing. Used together with a bosuns chair and a foot strop they enable you to climb up the halyard. There is an active thread on this in the PBO forum. I have to admit, I didn't get on with the technique finding it slow and laborious (great salesman me) but many people use it successfully and if its for you this is what you need. Only used a handful of times so in more or less new condition. £40 for the pair plus P&P

Cheers, Colin

Having got up, how do you get down? Do not ascenders just go up?

They are a bit like a rope clutch. You take the load off the ascender then release the clutch and slide it down the halyard. The clutch is sprung so its normal position is engaging the rope. When you have lowered it down the rope you let go the clutch and it re-engages on the rope. You do each one in turn, lowering yourself down the halyard.
