Shopping in Panama City yesterday I saw this product available at $45 / gallon. Now that seems so cheap i wondered if it could possibly be any good? Put Seahawk 44 on last year and it has all gone in 12 months, that cost $199/gallon! Anyone got any experience or views.......

No experience, but...

No experience of Pettit Yacht Copper, but it's an economy-priced antifouling designed primarily for cool water and low fouling areas - in other words, it isn't very powerful and probably isn't the best choice for your waters. Seahawk 44 on the other hand is a blend of TBT and copper oxide, and is highly regarded for its effectiveness.

If Seahawk 44 didn't work for you, was enough applied? Recommended coating is 2 thick coats plus a third coat on waterline and leading edges. For a Bowman 40, that would take at least 2 gallons, maybe more.

Re: No experience, but...

Yes we put on 4 gallons and a barrier coat to start. We were very surprised at how badly it has faired even allowing for the fact that we sat in cartagena for 6 weeks, notoriously bad fouling. We put extra coats behind the prop and at the bow and these have completely gone leaving us with just the yellow barrier coat visible! It has made us wonder about the sense it putting high cost antifoul(we added the extra tin that is available down here). We will be going thru the canal in the next 4-6 months and heading for Chile where the water is much cooler.I don't want to penny pinch but a difference of $1000 for antifoul needs serious thought!

Wow...

Wow, very strange that it's completely disappeared in places. Might there have been incompatibility with the barrier coat?

Re: Wow...

FYI.. TBT is illegal on boats under 60' or not aluminum. It has been outlawed for at least 10 years.

TBT...

Thanks for letting me know that! TBT, as I'm sure you're aware, can still legally be sold in parts of Africa, Asia and South America (and you'll note that the original poster mentioned being in Panama).

As for TBT having "been outlawed for at least 10 years", wasn't it as recently as 2001 that the IMO adopted the Convention on the Control of Harmful Antifouling Systems?

Re: TBT...

July 2003 in Aussie, IIRC. - hardly 10 years ago!
