I have just changed both head gaskets after one had failed. When dismantling, the poor access to the forward cylinder lower exhaust nut led me to remove the heads and manifolds as one lump. This is fine when stripping down but cannot be used as a method for reassembly . If you have worked on these engines, do you have any tips for accessing this nut. It is right behind the circular air filter flange.

yes
you need to put the manifolds on as a pair slide them on together but even then you can only just get the nut on it's the longest part of the job. Hope you remembered to use blue hylomar around the oil and water ways or they are likely to fail

I have a 13mm ring spanner which has been cut to about 40mm long and part of the ring cut away. This fits over the said bolt and you can turn it (slowly) from below - but you have to remove the lift pump for access. I could also get some access from above.

I only cottoned on to removing both cylinder heads as a pair after I had fought this bolt for half a day to undo it.
I did not do the refitting of the cylinder head/manifold, but would have thought you could install the complete assembly again as one piece.

Cheers
