I have recently bought a leisure 20 with a petter mini 6 diesel engine fitted. The engine starts and runs okay but I have had trouble stopping it .
I thought it was just a matter of adjusting the stop cable so I did that and it stopped okay in the marina.
I gave the engine a good run today as there was no wind for the sails and when I got back to the marina it would not stop.
I thought it was cable adjustment again so I tried tried to stop it from the engine with the control still no joy so I had to cut the air supply to the engine to stop it . Does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem is?

Normally the engine shut off mechanism works directly on the pump rail, that is, the rail that turns the helicals for each delivery valve housing, (one for each cyl).
The stop lever overrides the govener by rotating the helicals so far that the fuel to the delivery valve is shut off.
You would be better to start at the stop lever removing it carefully and checking to ensure that it is actuating the rail, and then working on to the rail itself, but I would reccomend having it checked by a qualified plant fitter or marine fitter as the govener will be set up at the factory and could be dangerous if it allowed the engine to over rev

I had the same problem with a Renault Couach.
I could start it and stop it on the mooring with no problem. However, at the end of motoring about the b....y thing would not switch off with the strangler.
My problem was (and still is - cos I can't be a***d fixing it - cobblers children) when I shut the throttle to tick-over, the strangler control is fouled by the throttle.
I can stop it by opening the throttle slightly and pulling the strangler.
I must fix it sometime........

Yes thats quite right. You may find if the engine has not been used for a long time that the mechanism is sticky. Sometimes the diesel oil dries out to a hard lacquer and things don't quite reach the end of their travel. Without taking the whole thing apart, take the cable off and soak the whole thing in WD 40 and work it back and forth by hand. It may just be reluctant to go as far as it should.

Hello again
thanks for all your help.I have been rtfm about my mini 6 and it mentions about not stopping under load and about giving it a few minutes after loading to settle down.
I tried it in the marina today and it worked okay after a short run.
So it is only after a long run that it did not stop. I will try a long run again and see what happans.

Watch this space.

That's good advice with any diesel. It should however stop when you tell it to. I would still try to ensure the movement of the arm goes full travel.

Hi all
Its me again with my tale of woe about the petter mini 6.
The latest and last update hopefully.
I was out yesterday for a few hours and I ran the engine for just over a 1 mile on the way home to the Marina.
I stopped it as per the manual,I disengaged the drive and allowed it to tick over for a few minutes I gave it a short rev then slowed it to tick over speed and then I pulled the stop, Hurrah it stopped okay.
So the answer is a bit of TLC which we all like now and again. Thanks to all with the patience to put up with my ramblings and offer me some advice.

Until the next time happy sailing
