Petter 2cyl diesel cooling system

Has anyone had experience in changing a Petter (AC2WM) 2cyl 4 stroke diesel from being 100% sea water cooled? I would like to run the engine heads with an antifreezed sealed system driven by a manual pump, this inturn cooled with a sea water heat exchanger thank you Geoff 26' Colvic Bilge Keeler.

Hi Geoff
I did this about 9 years ago following an article in pbo number 392 by Martin Parker.

It had plans to turn from a block of ally, a pump housing to take a regular ford fiesta water pump, and a small diameter pully, I used a water heat exchanger from a old combi boiler (worcester) and a small expansion tank from a mini metro.
Basically the new pump circulated the fresh water and was fitted to the lower port side on the engine support and ran from the alternator belt the system was not completely sealed as a small hole was drilled in the expansion tank lid to prevent pressure building up.
This engine /boat is no longer mine but the system is still in opperation and I have done the same with my yanmar 1GM10 in my current boat around 7 years ago.

hi same as pete i used a fiesta water pump but i used a heat exchanger gained by a sucsesfull bid on e/bay and still own the boat and it still works as well as the day i fitted it i would recomend it to anyone i to left a hole in the cap as i dont know how a petter would work under presure,i dont think it was designed to work that way so things may pop if you dont let it breath.Kieron

A bit off topic but I used to run one of these engines. I rigged up a diverter valve (washing machine fitting kit) so that the engine pump could drain the bilge if needed, as a sort of extra bilge pump.
When handy I used to run fresh water into the bilge and flush the engine through maybe 2/3 times a season. I felt it did a bit of good esp if I knew the engine was not going to be used for a few weeks; and of course at the end of the season.
