I read with interest the article and petition about most of the routes to bring dogs back to the UK being closed, as a sailing dog owner I signed the petition but at the end there is a donation page by American pay pal, kindly ticked for me at $25 and no other option to move on from the page without making a payment.

I have signed many petitions to the government, and never ever been asked for money before, and certainly not via an American Pay Pal site, Is it genuine? or some sort of scam?

It is important that Defra make some changes, but why would an internet based petition require so much money to be donated.

Sounds as though you know the answer to your scam question.

As a dog owner I have used their pet passport in the past. But I haven't heard about ferry routes being closed for pets being brought back to the UK. If that's the case then inevitably more people will bring them back with them on their own boats.

Where did you read that and where are the links, we were recently (2 days ago) looking into the possible routes and nowhere does it say the routes have been closed. Sounds like a scam for sure if you have to pay to sign a petition

YBW.Com news, you can get to it from the top of this page

Ah this one then http://www.pbo.co.uk/news/533929/sailors-pets-cut-adrift

From your original post it sounded as though the routes were being closed by Defra, but its the operators changing their policies, that'll be a market thing. It is without doubt problematic and should be made easier, but the controls are there for a reason. All the routes mentioned were not ones we were looking at which is probably why we found suitable ones for us, if they are still current when we want them who knows. Brittany ferries Bilbao and Santander to Plymouth do pet friendly cabins for one pet and owner and even have an area on deck to take them for walkies, according to their website. They also allow pets from Roscoff to Plymouth. Thats handy for where I sail but not so good for further up channel but it does look as though all the Brittany ferry routes do handle pets.

When you sign the petition and click submit your vote is recorded, on next page with the donation just close the page.

Stenna Line into Harwich still allow foot passegers with dog, but south coast short haul ferries don't.

yes I read it that you can take your dog if you take your car, but the problem is with foot passengers with dogs, as is the case with people sailing. Im glad my vote was counted, I didnt pay the 'donation'
