Finally it's nearly happening. We were going to go to the Baltic last year but things contrived to foil us. (Daughters Wedding) This year things have contrived to make us miss the planned departure in May but we are now planning to leave UK on or about 5th July and are heading initially for Kiel.

I'm going to have a bit more practice at this photo posting lark so I can post stuff when we are away. If we're not having too much fun. Won't want to waste time practicing then !!

Going through the Kiel canal and spending some time in the Baltic is one of my top 3 boating ambitions. Keep us up to date on your progress and keep posting those pics.

Hi Neale,
Posting pics from our trip is why I'm practicing. Used to be able to do it. Trouble is I'm not allowed into any photo sharing sites at work here nowadays. I'll have to wait until I get home. Thing is then we'll be leaving and I'll have no time to practice !

Kiel seems a decent base. Looks quite cheap to leave the boat in any of the many marinas there. €18/day minus 25% discount for 30 days plus. Also can get to millions of places in a few days. For example even Oslo is only about 350nm away. Helsinki is 630nm !!

We'll see how it goes.
Keep you posted.

Sounds great, but 630nm is a long day trip

Its a lovely part of the world. The Keil canal is an experience but try to do it in one day as the stop over points are small yacht clubs with very basic facilities.

The Keil estury area is fab - nice little YC on the East side, cant remember where but will have a look and get back to you. Fuel is readily available although lots of places are private yachtclubs. Very welcoming for visitors but I found quite a few dot take cards for fuel payment.

You are right about lots of places to go. We did Gothenburg to Keil in a day, and that is the other end of the Kategatt.

Have fun, and I am very much looking forward to the pics.

Insurance sorted today.
They extended our cruising range. 61deg N, 46deg S, 12deg W & 20deg E.
And at NO extra cost.

That's north of Bergen and to the Eastern edge of Poland. Includes all the east coast of Sweden. :)

The Yacht Club we stopped at on the east side of the Keil estury is at Laboe - really nice little place with some good dining and seemed to be quite a bit going on, plus a bigish chandlery and shops for provisions.
