petrol safety

Apologies if this has been covered before, but as a newboy to grp & petrol engined boats , I have read with some alarm on some forums as to the possibility of petrol being ignited by static electricity whist filling the tank.
Is this whilst filling with jerry cans or what ? Is this a real danger as i have never come across this before ? With a relatively small petrol tank and the lack of providers of petrol on the Thames it seems inevitable that at times you will need to fill in this manner. Perhaps someone can give me some more info & reassurance on this.

The Boat Safety Scheme requires that your fuel tank is "earthed" and the filler is electrically bonded to it. This is intended to reduce the risk from a static charge. See http://www.boatsafetyscheme.com/downloads/BSS_Guide_chap2.pdf section 2.7 for details.
