Petrol on the Caledonian Canal...

Dear All

Was along the Caledonian Canal this year - Beautiful

So I want to do it in my boat - thing is... It's petrol.

She takes £100 to fill up - so about 120lit and I don't yet know what she uses at tickover - but the question is - does anyone know if you can get petrol along the Caledonian Canal, and if so where.

I can then work out if I can do the trip or not

At Fort Augustus there is a filling station near the canal. This may be the case in other places.

Take a folding trolley and jerry cans /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Still in fairness does anyone know what an AQ145 would use an hr at little more than tickover??

Sounds like it's either do the whole thing at 4knts and jerrycans or hire a cruise boat, but I'd rather do it in mine.
 
As far as I am aware there are very few.

At Inverness there is a petrol station near the bridge at Tomnahurich.

At Fort Augustus there is a petrol station on the Inverness road at the foot of the locks.
(both about 300 meters from the water)
I am not too sure about the south end of the canal.

Unfortunately most of the hire boats are diesel and that is available at several places along the canal banks.

I do not think that petrol will now be available at the canal banks.
I may be wrong of course. I moved out of the area about four years ago.

A am afraid that, if you wish to transit the canal you will have to think of containers or drums and a trolley for moving them.

Don't think that's what you wanted to hear.

We did it in a petrol engined boat back in 2000. We completed the trip by taking 3 jerry cans and filling them up from garages on the road near to moorings. Carried the cans with a lightweight aluminium folding trolley.

Thanks to the joys on the tinternet most of the petrol companies have station locators on there sites. Spend a couple of hours planning your stops and you will be fine. There is also this site that locates lots of different companies.
 
Agree about the scenery, but with respect to petrol, there will be no quayside filling stations I am afraid.

Inverness and up on the upper reach (Tomnaturich) you'll find a petrol station, then I think the next one will be Fort Augustus, then off Loch Oich, near the watersports centre (I think)... thereafter Muirtown or Clachnaharry.
