does antone know the life expectancy off petrol 5-6 months posssibly or more? we just bought a macgregor 26 (american sailing version with a nice little 10 not a 50 or 70!) and the fuel has been sitting in the lines and tank for about 4 months, will it be safe to use? we are most probably going to ditch, but that poses the problem, where do we ditch it?

at that age should be fine, but if you are not happy with it add a gallon at a time to your car. The resultant small amount of oil will not make any difference to the car, and its age will also not be a problem with the newer fuel mixed.

saves throwing away expensive fuel, and the problems of disposal are solved.

I'm not sure if the latest blends change format with age, but you get a problem if free air space exists into which the volitile compounds will evaporate. In laymans terms you then end up with a fuel that with a cold engine is difficult to ignite ie more like paraffin. Before I joined one of the severn sisters many years ago we used to save up this old petrol from cans etc to use in the JAP petrol/paraffin engine in the paraffin tank in the tractors and the old Bamford baler on the farm - this was in the days of petrol being about 4 shillings a gallon.
