He wants to build the £70m Medina Yachting Village on all the land he has bought up on the West side of the river. It is a 15-acre site comprising of the GBR Challenge base, Team Kingfisher, Souters and the J. Samuel Whites Industrial Estate. He wants to create a permament Americas Cup base for the GBR Challenge from which future British challenges - or defences - could be launched. Ellen M would also be based there as well as associated marine industrial units, a hotel, health & fitness centre, a pub and shop. There could be 350 homes. Many new pontoons would also be put out in the river. The 90-year-old hammerhead crane might have to go and a new sea-wall built. It would be the biggest thing to happen to Cowes for many a long year.
Cowes - armpit of south coast. Difficult to imagine what could screw it up further. If PH is committed to Cowes, rather than to PH, then maybe it will do some good.
If he puts in pontoons with reasonable access, toilets and showers and charges me no more than a tenner per night for me and my old Centaur then it sounds great....but alas I suspect I will be disappointed.
I think he's setting his sights at a slightly different market:
"Harrison's vision is to bring the America's Cup back to Britain and create a permanent base for the GBR Challenge from which future British challenges - or defences - could be launched.
Ellen MacArthur's Offshore Challenges Sailing Team could also be permanently based there in a development set to also include associated marine industrial units, a top-class hotel, health and fitness centre, waterfront pub-restaurant and a local shop.
Architects say there could be 350 homes and creation of more than 400 jobs.
Mr Harrison wants to be able to demolish the current asbestos-clad shed and be in a purpose-built headquarters in 2004 to give him two clear years to mount a challenge for the next America's Cup, expected in 2006."
Go wash your mouth out, we do not want a tunnel or bridge, it would change the character of the Island irrevocably, and bring all of the problems you have and we do not here.
As I understand it the plan is to have half residential development and half industrial in an area that is currently zoned as industrial. Ther is a larger plan, for the whole of the Medina area. It goes on about development and all sorts of things to make money for entrepreneurs, but you will not find a mention of the people who already live here or of the car parking problems in Cowes, which are about to get worse as the Planners have pernitted building on one of the biggest car parks in the town.
Still we have the best view from the ISC and happy hour on friday so who's complaining
I don't have a major problem with it. The area is in need of some development as there is so little actual ship-building there now. It is essential that the new sea-wall is an open walkway for the public.
As one who has tended to avoid the mayhem of Cowes except for mid week, I think it would probably be a good thing. Problem is though, that as Cowes is seen as the "centre of yachting" by many, how long would it take to become chronically overcrowded again once those who have shied away in the past decide to put it back on their list of destinations?
These views may be naive because I don't know that much about Peter Harrison. But I'm sure I'll hear if they are and be interested at that.
We'd all be chuffed if he bought the cup back, as indeed we are about Ellen's achievements. So far his investment and efforts have produced respectable results. If he sees a way of continuing with that and funding, or even making a profit with it - excellent. (Does it mean a new B&Q Chandlery on site)?
The Island economy has always been very sluggish and they have repeatedly sought European cash. Anything like this will help. It's not as if this is a local beauty spot! We all complain at the lack of media attention and that the French have a much more open view of their sailors. Again, this can only help.
The Chancellor can't get his sums right without putting anything into our sport, so private money it'll always have to be! We're lucky that there is some great young talent coming up in the UK. Let's create more facilities that will give them (and more of them), some inspiration and pride.
