I think its sad news that the GBR Challenge is being put on hold, I think we owe a dept of thanks to Peter Harrison for putting a sense of pride back into British yachting, not only with the AC campaign but also his Olympic support.

I know some parties will claim his actions were only for personal financial gain (how they work that out I don't know though), but when you consider some deserving people(?) who recieve awards in the UK Honours System, I strongly believe that his actions deserve reconition at national level.

He certainly has put a lot in to british sailing and it seems a great pity that no major corporation could come forward and sponsor the AC project.

You can understand his reasons for pulling out though
He puts up £20M so we can enter and see what its all about and nobody else can be bothered to contribute towards the campaign going forward.
Absolutely disgusting for a country with a yachting tradition like ours.

I agree his efforts should be rewarded for contribution to sailing in America's Cup, Admirals Cup and supporting the Sailability charity.

Pity somebody like Branson couldn't have chipped in with £5M or so just to start the ball rolling and see if anything came of it.

Now the decision by Ben Ainslie to sign up with Team NZ and Ian Percy to go to the Italians looks like a smart move. We can't offer an alternativeand that's a bloody shame.

Thank you Peter Harrison for what you did anyway, pity not many other people were prepared to buy in to the dream

Now, if we were all to support sailing sponsors by choosing to buy their goods and services instead of their rivals' products. MMn. Would that help tip the balance towards more active sponsorship?

What happened to good old fashioned benefactors ?

We don't all have to buy a particular cigarette brand or buy certain energy drinks to enjoy F1 ?

Not everything has to be commercially viable but I appreciate in most cases it is.
A lot of football chairmen put money into clubs and they no dam well they won't see most of it back but they do it presumably out of the love of the club and giving something to the community.

I think Peter Harrison was 'putting a little back' having earnt about £300M from Chernikeef.

Its a pity others who could well afford it didn't want to follow his lead.

Re:A mockers clap

thats what we called it when they applauded the last bloke home at sports day.

I'd rather not give the bloke some band aid "honour" and say there there.

What he needs is a fresh challenge and he'll pretty soon find one I'd bet.

I've just got back from B&Q so good luck Ellen.

Re:A mockers clap

Peter didn't take anything out, he worked in a damp building with Chernikeeef and saw the potential of Cisco before any of the rest did and made his money through following the opportunity he saw and worked hard at it. He might be an awkward person, but he is also one of the niicest people you could ever meet. I for one do not believe that he did what he did as an exercise in self aggrandisement but truly wanted to put the UK back on the map. He does deserve recognition. Enjoy your sailing Peter!

She and B&Q got quite a good bit of coverage on the TV news (as far as that type of news goes /forums/images/icons/frown.gif) last night here in NZ.
