Caught a piece on the local Westcountry news about Pete Goss and the Spirit Of Mystery, a newly built replica of a Cornish Lugger that sailed to Australia with a crew of seven 154 years ago.
The Spirit Of Mystery
After a summer of sea trials Pete is going to attempt the same feat without electronics or engine, his teenage son is part of the crew.

Yes. Looks a strong, well-built vessel when we visited three weeks ago

The Southern Cross on her bow a nice touch.

His son has been training for the Ten Tors and building his fitness for the voyage

Eh? Where did you see that - the bbc video of it being launched - no shaft or prop visible - nor a cutout for one ...

I've looked through, but couldn't see an identifiable engine ... would you really have an engine coming out just one side of the boat? Cos I can't see it in this shot but can't find a picture of the starboard quarter ....

Well you are looking at the wrong side. That is the port side.Look on the website and you will see it.
Engines on trad boats are comanly set to one side.
I think I may be right as I have driven past the boat twice a day since it was started.

I'm looking on the site but can't find it ... that's what I'm saying - I'm not saying you're wrong - but I've not seen the evidence to prove either way!

Apparently loading the ballast - can't see an engine ....

Finishing off the painting - not sure what that is at the far end ....

What is the issue. So what if it has got an engine. Just because there is one does not mean it will be used on passage.

If he went to sea without saftey equipment (Including and engine) and something went wrong, can you imagine the uproar.

Lets get real here.

WILL YOU HAVE AN ENGINE?

Yes, but we won't use it as the plan is to follow in the spirit of the original voyage so we will have no electrics apart from a solar panel servicing a satcom system such that we can update the website. For various legal and practical reasons it became necessary to put an engine in, but we won't use it for the trip and I like the idea of having a small carbon footprint thanks to going back to basics.

I was at the launch. Yes, the engine is quarter mounted as it was on my old gaffer. A bit of a pain to manoeuvre but pretty essential these days when sailing coastwise. I don't know if they will leave the prop in place for the voyage. With a hefty dipping lug rig it's going to be hard work for a crew of 3 men and a boy.

There is a good write up in Yachting World. Yes Mystery has an engine, easier to instal during build. Remember the engine in Team Philips had to be assembled in parts when boat was almost completed, couldnt get it inside in one piece.
