Firewall

I use the Symantics personale firewall software - essential to have something like this on a broadband connection - I haven't seen a popup in the last year.

Step 1 - Go to John Lewis and buy a Mac
Step 2 - Download the Safari web browser from Apple's web site
Step 3 - Go to the Safari pull down menu and select 'Block Pop-Up Windows'

Then not only will you have no more Pop-Up's but a great PC that is fast, will never crash and looks good too!!

But it isnt a PC, and wont reliably run all PC software, even on OS X. Market share of Apple worldwide now rivals Acer, which is of course one of the dominant forces in worldwide computing...

What do the letters PC stand for?

Most people use a PC for typing letter, email and browsing the internet, a Mac can do all of that, so can my Psion come to think of it and that boots up in less than a second.

Could get in to the Mac vs Windows argument but best not as its in the same legue as Cat vs Mono and 1001 reasons not to buy a Bavaria, could go on forever.

I agree in many ways - but running any of the programming environments I habitualy use proved impossible (Delphi, Kylix, VB & VFP). Until a few months ago you couldnt synchronise PIM data with mobile phones.

In the context of this forum I couldnt get either MaxSea, Euronav or my own navigation software to run, nor could I get a GRIB viewer to work. So other than the fact I couldnt earn a living, nor could it help with my sailing it was perfect. In fairness it did sync with an iPod (hardly surprising) - but not much better than MusicMatch did - and trying to get it to access the music server at home was fraught..

Get the google toolbar

Go to www.google.co.uk. Type in Toolbar in the search box.
Choose the first option and get the google toolbar. Once it has been downloaded there is a popup blocker - it has currently blocked 46 as I look at my screen. In addition the google toolbar is a really handy little toolbar that sits nicely in the screen and gives you instant access to the search engine.
Hope this helps
PS Its Free

you can allow pop ups on specified sites by choice, which is sometimes necessary.

Use the Netscape browser, the latest 7.1 is nice but rather big. This has a nice pop-up manager in it so that you tell Netscape which sites can genuinely put up pop-up windows (say some internet email web site), but deny others.

I tried the google toolbar but it either didn't work in aol or trains for brains here got it wrong. Even I could follow this though:-
Block Messenger Pop-up Spam
Ever gotten a grey pop-up titled Messenger Service? Chances are it was a messenger pop-up -- a new kind of spam that targets PCs running Microsoft Windows 2000 or XP.

To turn off the setting in Windows that allows these pop-ups just follow the simple steps below relative to your version of Windows, then change your settings if you're vulnerable. A message will appear on your screen when it's done.

Note: Before starting the fix ensure that your PC is not networked with other computers as disabling this feature of the operating system may break programs that rely on internal networking. Most home users will be unaffected.

Turn off messenger pop-ups now!
1. To disable Windows Messenger Service click Start > Run
2. Type services.msc /s
3. In the Services winsdow, scroll down to locate Messenger.
4. Right click on the word Messenger and select Properties.
5. Click the General tab
6. In the Start up panel field, click the down arrow and select Disabled. Just below in Service Status, click on the Stop button. This will stop the process, and setting to disabled will stop the service running next time Windows is restarted.
