Can any one recommend a PLB as i would like to buy one as i often go out on my own day or night. The reason it is made me decide to get one is that i responed to a man over board in langstone harbour and along with others we searched but no luck in finding the person. I have long thought about getting one and what happened the other day has made my mind up. Any recommendation appreciated

I’ve not had to use mine in anger thank god, but the one I own is a ResQLink+.

I think they are all much a muchness but fair play getting one. You can never be ill prepared for the unthinkable.

I don't think there is much to choose between them in terms of their ability to get you rescued. Battery capacity - and hence run time - is always a compromise - you want the high capacity, but you also want it to be small and light. If you are talking about European coastal usage, this probably does not matter - they will all run for at least 12 hours and that should be enough to get you rescued just about anywhere within a hundred miles of the European coast. The other potentially significant difference between them is the frequency of battery replacement and the cost. The battery lifetime may be as short as three years and the cost of replacement for some is almost as much as a new PLB. Some are user replaceable - which may be important to you.

having gone to the expense of buying one, don't forget that they are not exclusively for marine use. When my son went on a trip that would take him hundreds of miles from civilisation in Arctic Canada we lent him a PLB in case he got lost or the car broke down. Even something as mundane as hill walking in this country can benefit from a PLB in your pocket - there are plenty of places where the mobile phone signal is unreliable and a fall leading to a broken leg could leave you in great pain for a long time before you are found.
