Peeps might be interested in the 'Ascot Weather Station' device from Aldi Stores.

This £17.99 product senses and displays - among other stuff - Temp inside and out, with trends; Relative Humidity in and out, with trends ( just the thing for predicting imminent fog ), Rising and Setting Times for Sun and Moon, and Moonphase; Radio-Corrected Time and Date for your chosen city/time zone; a rough Forecast based on the above, and the corrected Barometric Pressure in Hector's Pastilles ( or millibars, in 'old money' ) and visual Barometric History over time.

This latter feature is, for me, a VIP 'must have' and - although the thingy is designed to run off wee batteries - I'm sure some gadget-geek will soon come up with a way to power it from a boat battery ( Nigel.....! Where are you?) and have it published in PBO.

No, I don't have shares in Aldi; I just think this is a potentially useful boaty-bit at a werry welcome price.

I have one from the Science museum, runs on a single AAA battery which lasts about 16-18 months without using the alarm feature, and gives a low battery warning for about a month before slowly fading out. Not worth the wiring hassle, as mine is stuck with a couple of inches of velcro to the nav station, and stays there no matter what the pounding.
I paid 30 quid which was a bargain then.

Speaking of gadget geeks, I'm sure you know someone ex of Bristol Marina who could find a way to power your 'thingy' if you send in via pigeon post to Lagos for Christmas /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hi Bill

Got one for my Birthday!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Find it very useful ............... for covering up a old picture mark in the office!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Must admit though the info, once calibrated, is excellent for forecasting, Barometric pressure indicating rise and fall history, moon phase's, state of tide. Info that could be found in two or three other pieces of equipment or publications. Just handy at a glance stuff. Although I haven't learnt to trust it yet!!!

Great price Bill, how many did you buy?

I have a couple of the older ones from a year ago. I was impressed enough with the one I got for Jissel to get another for the house. Def. no regrets.

The new ones are landscape, and IMO, nicer than the portrait style of the ones I have.

For serious use, I'd want to recalibrate the barometer every couple of months, but it's the change, esp. rate of change that matters more than the absolute pressure to me.

BTW, Lidl have some portable vices with a big suction pad for a fiver. I nearly ripped the worktop of my kitchen wall testing the adhesion of the one I got. Just the job for the boat.

Beware! This guy IS a troll - pointy ears, straggly beard, red leather pointy-toe boots, red- rimmed eyes from too much El Cheapo!

I thot he'd pop up, 'cos I've posted an 'ook' for him elsewhere.

Go and do something useful, like the washing-up.....!

I'm interested, have just looked at their web site but don't see it. Is it a one off or regularly stocked? Where did you find yours?
