I posted some weeks ago asking for help with travel insurance to cover a sailing trip between Plymouth and Vilamoura. I followed up on the advice given and I hope the following may be of some use to anyone else trying to find insurance to cover offshore sailing.
Dog Tag in the UK will provide the necessary cover, including medical evacuation providing that you correctly select the option for offshore sailing when you apply. They will also confirm by email the cover for evacuation. However they will only insure UK residents, normally defined as someone whose main residence is in the UK and that they have lived there at least six months prior to the trip. As I live abroad and outside of the EC it was of no use for me.
Like wise the main travel insurers inside the UK would not provide cover to a none UK resident even though they have offices in other countries around the world.
Finally I came across International Health Insurance, www.ihi.com, who will provide the necessary cover, confirmed by email, to a resident of almost any country in the world. Their only stipulation being that the cover does not apply in your stated country of residence.
Hope that all makes sense
