No direct experiance -
But the 350 hp - 7.2 L CAT powered older versions ( pre Ferretti 2004 ) would be the one to go for . Loads of torque ,lower revs

I understand the 5.1 L Yanmar 370 hp is not as reliable and parts are expensive relative to CAT,s
The hull profile ,dead rise looks like a deep V so should be great sea keeping . This means that you can cut through waves ,faster and smother .
Stern drive boats like Volvo Penta D6 , kad 44 etc have the smaller engines mounted aft .To get lift the have flatter aft sections to push up the back of the boat .This means they slam more easily in waves, especially up wind .
You end up slowing down .
Meanwhile the shaft drive deeper V ( @ the stern -called dead rise ) keeps going -comfortabley in the same sea state.
Have a look arround ship yards ,at boats out of rhe water - it's the underwater shape steepness of the V -
Like Pershings , Riva,s Itama s ,Magnums ,Baia ,
Another boat similiar is the Baia one ,or zero -google them .

AFAIK, the Yanmar is actually a solid good engine, with a great power to weight ratio - something which I guess could only make a good boat as the P37 even better.
They did screw up the engine at some stage though, due to some emissions driven modifications to the pump, but I can't tell by heart which versions were involved.
IIRC, Latestarter knows all the details - it might be worth for the OP to pm him, if he doesn't see this thread...

Have sold two of these and helm'd a Cat 355hp powered Pershing 37 Cabin version last year, in East coast of Sicily and back.
I sell them very fast even at well above market prices if the condition is good.
She is a not a pure deep Vee hull since its dead-rise is 15 degrees aft, but very slim and sharp entry forward.
The Yanmar powered models are said to give a knot or two more, I topped 39 knots max with the Cats in light load (36 knots loaded).
They consume about 100 lph at 28 knots.

She is surely more seaworthy and gives a better ride to any stern drive boats in similar dimensions.
Very dry and impossible to get wet unless it is very rough seas, from any sea direction. Planning speed of about 13 knots only.
Her exterior cockpit is very spacious indeed (you will need to buy a 50 ft or more to have the same space, and the engine room is a place you can really sleep in.
The interior of the cabin version is nice for a couple (two persons) or a family with two young kids.

Criticism is from my side would be the following
- large turning circle at planning speeds (this can be reduced if you help with one of the tabs, and engine). Once you get use to it becomes a no problem.
- No rudder indicator which helps for the above (can be retrofitted)
- couple of sub-standard compartment latches-locks as in the interior fridge-freezer

Good points nearly all the rest, but engine room, cockpit size, very high quality exterior fittings (railing / cleats etc) would top lists,

For the turning circle I was told that Pershing did offer a larger size rudder at some point but I do not know if this is true.

Marina manovring is a breeze and you can actually take her anywhere without the use of a bow thrust-er, even when its windy.

Good luck with the purchase she is a fabulous boat indeed.

6LY STP 370 was a simple rock solid engine and built reputation of Yanmar in power boats. When Yanmar opened out the bore beyond 100 mm to get to 420 started to go down hill. All ended in tears at Tier 2 with half baked quasi electronic hyper expensive fuel system resulting in huge loss of market share. Tier 3 has put the wheel back on with new Denso common rail fuel system lets wait and see.

By comparison 3116 TA 350 had a colorful history, little difference in real power output 350 vs 361 but big difference in weight 680 kgs Vs 510 of Yanmar however biggest deal is that 6LY is almost 3 dBA quieter at rated speed.

hi thank you latestarter1
so the engine to go for is the 6ly stp with 370hp right ?
one more question , can these give feedback to a raymarine/lowrance etc like a canbus or nmea 2000 device for various parameter
the one im going to look at doesnt have an electronic intrument device on its helm ... just dials and i happen to have a lowrance hds3 9" from my previous boat
many thanks
