Reading the interesting thread about Mediterranean mooring techniques, brought something else to mind about which it is best to be forewarned.
You will observe in French waters, persons being instructed in small motor boats to achieve proficiency in handling craft such as "Peche Promenades" or sport fishing craft, some with sliding glass doors to the wheel shelter, some without.
One of usually two, will steer and the other will be encouraged to grapple the pontoon finger with a gaff or boathook.
Usually conducted under idyllic conditions.
What to watch out for is when skipper changes the smaller craft for a larger one.
Then it appears that the crew is often not informed that the former technique is useless when confronted with several more tons of boat, and thus can be observed screaming or shouting, when their arms are being dragged off by the effect of wind or tide on the situation.
It is remarkable that without exception, the participant crew is not informed that it is sharpish line handling skills that must replace the use of the gaff or "crochet".
Just be forewarned!
