what could have circumnavigated faster than Ellen on a sailing boat, will they tell me?
AND, would they e-mail the BBC so that they can tell us something else than that Ellen survived on ONLY 20 MINS SLEEP A DAY. Which has admittedly changed from the 15 mins they were saying this morning.
It has been obvious that the media know NOTHING about sailing, and they have been visibly struggling to fill the oceans of time allotted to them today. So, they have concentrated rather on the sleep deprivation, rather than the facts;-
1)the mainsail must weigh at least 1 metric ton
2) it has to be adjusted many times a day
3) tuning of the genoa/staysail/what-ever-the-third-furled-jib-is-called takes time and concentration
4)knowledge of all the boat systems is essential for her to maintain them throughout the circumnavigation

BUT, for me, what is there available with today's technology that could do the circumnavigation faster?

There will be somebody (likely many) out there who will know all these facts, come on guys, don't let me down!

Can't be many other things, because of the endurance aspect. I guess one of the US nuclear-fuelled aircraft carriers, like the Nimitz, could probably do it pretty fast, and perhaps wouldn't be slowed down by adverse weather as much as Ellen?

PS. B&Q's mainsail has a bigger surface area than the Sargasso Sea. Or was it a tennis court? But at least it didn't suffer from sleep deprivation.

Seriously-----------------------------, I would have thought that only a nuclear sub could compete, when you take into consideration the distance and fuel/food requirements.

But what do I know? (I could have come up with the '747 with no seats' idea).

Ther isn't much, except another sailing multihull to compete, is there?

Re: Well maybe

They went round in a two seater aircraft non stop, balloons have done, NASA have a solar powered un-manned aircraft that can stay up indefinately, space shuttle etc.

Re: Well maybe

Okay okay, I am wrong again!!
Everyone is at it, in anything that will fly or float. But that still leaves the TV presenters with no easily understood ( for the mass TV audience) comparison. Surely some one can come up with SOMETHING?

You have never been short of a suggestion before.

Albatrosses fly very quickly and have been known to circumnavigate. Not sure whether any have taken part in officially timed trials though.

Re: Crikey! The BBC have a sailing correspondent.

I've never heard of him but I doubt if he's heard of me so we're quits.

The answer to your question is........ The next loony that can cause a sober plc. to throw enough money at him/her to have a go. There's loads of them dying to try getting by on 10minutes sleep and being patronized by the beeb's yottie expert. I quite like Sian though.

I think you can be circumsised in about 30 seconds with a skilled practitioner

Re: Well maybe

The Virgin global flyer See Here will be attempting to go non stop around the world in 80 hours. I doubt any other aircraft could do it non stop.
In theory some military planes could do it with lots of mid air refuelling - but that sort of outside assitance is probably not allowed for the purposes of this comparison.
I'm pretty sure no other plane (even the stripped out 747 mentioned earlier) could carry enough fuel to do the trip (the weigh of the fuel would prevent the aircraft from taking off).
Nuclear subs and ships could do it as they are limited only by the amount of fuel on board, and some of the US and Russion subs can apparently do 30-40knots or more

Re: Well maybe

According to my book on subs (Submarines of the 21st century)
The Russian Alfa class attack sub can do 45knts submerged and has a max dive depth of 1000mtr due to its Titanium hull!! Phew!!

Rather than what could go faster, you could perhaps compare her performance with the average 230 days that it took the clippers to do the same voyage.
