Would these engines be underpowered in a 37ft colvic sunset ,and does anyone have any experience of them good or bad ? Similarly with the Clovis itself ?Many thanks- Tim
What does old Colvic Sunquest weigh?
Perkins Sabre 225 has a bit of a blunt edge, if you use the Bosch VE spec sheet maximum output can only be 185/190 which has led to lots of grumpy owners over the years.
we have 225 in our colvic she gets 20 21 knots full poke we tend to plane at 17 is as sweet as a nut but would like a touch more as would all of us
Anemic power output was problem for owners who re-powered vessels which had on the face of it existing engines of nominally lower power. In one specific case owner who had a pair of tired old Ford Dorset 212's re-powered with PS 225's and lost almost 3 knots. Met with the owner who had commissioned the re-power and I checked the whole installation, it was faultless. Biggest beef by the owner was the WAY that PS 225 delivered power, his geriatric old Ford Sabre Dorsets smoked like crazy on start up, and oil carryover filled the puke bottles after just a few trips out, but what owner could not get his head around was difference sheer get up and go, comment was that he could roll a fag after putting the hammer down whilst engine got its act together, the previous old ladies had real urge by comparison. (Are you listening Omega).
Later Ford Sabre Dover 225's would simply blow the doors off their successor the Perkins Sabre 225's.
