I have two Perkins 6354 turbos which require servicing.

What grade and quantity of oil should i be using? Do i need mineral based oil or a semi sythetic as they are turbocharged?

I already have fuel filters change in addtion to the the oil. Is there anything else i should do to get them ready for the season?

They're oldish engines (like mine) and I use Shell Rimula x which is also used by all the local charter boys, it's from memory 15/40 grade and was also recommended by my engine manufacturer Mermaid. Was told not to use anything synthetic, that's for newer engines.

Personally I see no reason why you should not use the best quality synthetic oil. There is simply no comparison in the performance of these advanced oils and old fashioned mineral oil. Your engines need the best protection you can give them and the only logical argument for using anything else is that it is cheaper. I have heard many people advocate using mineral oil on older engines but have never heard a logical argument for it.

I had an old volvo car once and thought I'd give it a treat and change the oil - OK I'll buy it the best de-sludging super new formula very very best.... BIG MISTAKE .. this stuff de sluged the whole bloody engine alright and clogged up the oilways and seized the camshaft.
I'll always use ordinary "cheap" Volvo/BP 15w40 now and change it and the filters more often.

I agree that if your engine is in that bad a state it's probably beyond recovery anyway. The damage was really done by the previous neglect that got it in that state in the first place. To get rid of sludge and the like by using flushing oil before refilling is always a good idea if the engine has previously been run on mineral oil and has not had regular oil changes. My point is that there is no reason an older engine should not benefit from high quality oil. If it is really sludged up flush it out first. It's not age that kills diesel engines. It's neglect.

I would not use fully synthetic on an old engine, because the viscocity is different, and will result in huge oil consumption, specially with worn bore and bearings. I would speak to tech service on one of the oil companies - turbo bearings are a problem and you need specialist advice

I agree do NOT use synthetic oil on these old engines
