Perkins rattle in neutral

Hi.
I have a Perkins perama and in neutral at tick over its developed a rattle which seems to be coming from the engine area not the gb which comes and goes, but in gear under load it dissappears. I have been told that it might be the damper plate failing. The gearbox is a ZF5.
Any ideas?

Just had a different pair of ears listen and he thinks the rattle /whirl noise happens in gear as well.

Does it go if you 'blip' the throttle? One of my Volvos has started a similar rattle which goes in gear or when the engine is reved. I'm suspecting the damper plate.

It seems to rattle less under load. The guy was supposed to come out this morning to diagnose the problem, but he never showed. He's coming tomorrow he says. I'm thinking damper plate. Easy fix unless I need to remove the bell housing.

The damper plate on the Volvo is in the bell housing so needs removal of the gearbox, as I understand. I plan to undertake this at the end of season when she's out of the water - hopefully it will hold until then.

Yes u understand that, but hopefully the damper plate on this model can be changed by just removing the gearbox and adapter plate. Otherwise the bell housing will have to come off.

Sorry I don't know with a Perkins. Fingers crossed that it's not required.
