My Volvo Penta MD22L-B has a plaque on the back of the engine block saying "Manufactured in the UK by Perkins".

Does anybody happen to know if this was just a block made exclusively for VP and fitted-out with VP accessories, or if there is a Perkins equivalent of the whole engine (and if so, which model)???

I do not plan to do strange things, just thinking that if I find myself at trouble sourcing a VP spare, knowing that there is a Perkins equivalent may turn out to be usefull....

TIA,

Perkins Prima M50 I think?
Also fitted (non-marinised) to Montego and Maestro cars and some Leyland-Daf vans.
Best wait for someone else to confirm that though..

A lot of the VP engines later were re-badged full Perkins engines ... still are I believe ....

Correct - my local garage get me filters from Mann, (Not Volvo Penta), and it saves a fortune. They have also given me the canmbelt change pages out of their secret book, (they dont expect to ever do a maestro or a Montego Diesel again <g>

Just waiting for the Haynes manual for the Montego 2 Litre Perkins Prima Diesel model.

I think mine is the MD22L-A

Cheers

Yes yes to confirm the MD22 was the Prima range, 50hp @ 3000rpm, 60hp @ 4000rpm & a turbo version - 78hp @ 4500rpm!! (volvo took this to 105hp! not all that good for slow running cruisers!) - In the Perkins industrial it was the 500 Series.

The 2040 was related to the Perkins Perama range. 3cyl 20hp , 25hp, 30hp & 35hp all at 3600rpm. Again in the industrial range it was the 100 Series.

Hope this helps. I trained on them and still have a soft spot for the Perkins engines!

As confirmed by others, Perkins Prima 50 = MD22L. For spares, I have had excellent service from DIPERK (sales@diperk.co.uk) who may well be cheaper than Volvo. The Haynes Manual devoted to the engine (Montego/Maestro et al) is a worthwhile acquisition too.

I am not convinced that the 200x series are based on any other engine, and were a Volvo special. Incidentally the spares prices for the 200X series are FAR higher than for the later 2010/20/30/40 series. My theory is that it was this series that gave VP a bad name for spares prices.

Someone may know better...

Agree with John that 2000 series was a one-off marine range, although they may have sourced from an unknown supplier. I think Bukh and Yanmar are the only co's making marine engines from scratch, and even then the Yanmar is probably from the parts bin rather than a clean sheet varient - comment applies to GM series, not sure about the new YM.
