Someone very kindly gave me a lead for getting a Perkins engine manual off the net.
Unfortuanetely it was for a Perkins 4108
I have since found I have a Perkins 6354.

Anyone know where i can get the manual for the 6354, please
it is about 35 + years old
Thanks

Is it no longer available form Perkins? www.diperk.co.uk

Lots of that engine still running, particularly in combine harvesters.

I have the manual and could photocopy the odd page, you really only need the manual for torque settings and timing marks etc. The rest is like Fisher Price my first engine!

P.S. wel lworth altering the cooling system to put the fresh water in the exhaust manifold.

I am asking questions as the boat was self built by a quote ''engineer'', but the engineer at present working on it.
Tells me that the water cooling pump is working by belts, at 6X engine speed, and should be working at 0.5 times engine speed, which could explain why the engine never reached full temerature on surveyor trial.
Why would an engineer do this ?

the water cooled exhaust manifold is about £1000 to replace, its cooled by sea water and suffers from rusting from the inside out and eventually cracking, there is a spare port on the fresh water pump, a fitting in here and a fitting in the inspection port in the back of the cylinderhead and some plumbing changes and you can have the manifold full of antifreeze/freshwater.

as you point out, they have a habit of running cool, the above helps to combat this also, they run best at 95 degs if you can get it up that high.

great engine, robust as you like, not a lot of hp for the weight but otherwise great.

hope this helps

I've got a pdf copy of the 6354 manual on CD; I could email it to you if you have broadband, or possibly attempt a CD burn and post it to you, but Nero and I don't get on, so it might get ugly......

cheers,
David
