PERKINS 6.354

Slow power loss yesterday until after 10 mins shaft stopped turning,. Reached Hamble on end of long string (thank you Lepe Venturers).
Engine still sweet but no drive - query clutch/gearbox, or could it be simple?
Need a good local engineer, suggestions welcome.

You most likely if its a 6354 have got the BW 72 gearbox?

have you checked the fluid level lately? what state is the fluid in? should be clear and red, if its cloudy and smelly tats bad.

BW72 do some times burn out the clutch packs, esp if you run them with the fluid level low.

I had one repaired by Mermaid marine a couple of years ago, new clutch pack and seals and bolts and run up on dyno came to about 300 quid.

I'd offer to come and have a look as I'm in Hamble but sadly this week am in KL.

Aha, a timely warning to me. S/H box loses ATF from somewhere, still trying to determine if the culprit is the hose to the pressure gauge, what I think is a pressure relief valve thingy or somewhere else. How much ATF should there be in it, the other possibility is that its never been properly full. A manual would be good if anyone knows where to get one.

Got a manual, when I get back to uk I could copy it for you will be next week.

You need to dip it I think with the engine idling, you get a falsely high reading when you stop the engine.

Careful, you will burn out the clutch pack if you run it low....I know this.....

If the oils gone black its the clutches burnt out, could be the pump has given up, take a pipe of from the cooler and see if you get any oil out, if not then its the pump. Could be the drive plate on the flywheel thats broke up.

Be very grateful for the manual. ATF is a nice pink colour that just sits at the minimum level.

What gearbox make/model have you got?

If its a Borg Warner, you can download one from the web somewhere, let me know if it is, and I will see if I can remember where I put the link!

Failing that I have a PDF of it somewhere too.
