Hi all I'm new to this so if it's in the wrong place I'm sorry.
I have a perkins 4236m90 and its running at just below 100 degrees even if it revs are at 1200 or 2400 I cleaned out the cold water inlet and put a new impeller in every time I have to fill the header tank with about half pint of water but she starts on first turn and never miss a beat any ideas where to start or is this normal for these engines. Thanks for your time and knowledge.

We have one, very tough engine imo. Was the mainstay of the massive hire fleet on the Shannon navigation in Ireland.

Not sure on the 100deg temp, I think ours runs 80-90degC. How accurate is your gauge? Maybe borrow an IR heat gun to validate? I would say a half pint is maybe a bit much - maybe overfilling and it’s just getting chucked out the overflow. When I check the level in the header tank I just make sure that the level is maybe max 1” below the cap.

I had an overheat when an impeller broke up and proceeded to dump all the bits into the heat exchanger - that was a right b****ard to fix. Maybe this has happened on the past with yours? If yours is a seaboat is the HE scaled, people on here flush with Brick cleaner to remove.

Thanks Ferris for your response it's only fresh water . how did you clean out the hater exchange. you say it was a night mare.

Not entirely sure about Perkins but my experience with fords is to find the thermostat and bin it!! I've had far too many fail or block up with salt/ fine weed! I know people do say that an engine should run at 90° but I prefer them much cooler.

We had to take off the water pump and the pipe work up to the HE and then fish the bits out from the inlet. Great fun!
