Excuse me reopening this thread so soon but time is now critical if we are going to get out this month!!
I am trying to get my existing starter repaired but also looking to replace it ( it has 'gone' 3 times in 5 years)
The current starter is marked CA45F but the manual indicated Lucas M45 SID.
The auto elecrician said it was a 'complex' starter with lots to go wrong in a marine environment and that there may be simpler one which would fit.
Does anyone know a good source for a starter?... DiPerk no longer stock it ASAP cant help.
I have found a site selling lots of new starters for old vehicles
I am trying to remember what the perkins was fitted to, can anyone help here??
Also what is the difference between a marinised and a standard starter ( apart from from the cost!! as always) ?
Most gratefull for any help on this.
Thanks

Thanks guys for the tips and info the site was interesting but in the end I have bitten the bullet and ordered a new one the same as the existing £240 sounded expensive to me but not as bad as some prices I have seen.
I believe that this is the insulated type which means the earth lead goes direct back to the battery rather than picking up from the engine.
Our planned holiday weekend depends on getting it fixed so ( touch wood) I can fix it all on Thursday.
Thanks again for the useful information.

hi pcatterall
Can you let me know whether the starter motor you did buy is definitely insulated earth and where you bought it, please? I have a 4108 in my steel sailing yacht and it is insulated earth and I am thinking of getting hold of a spare.
Thanks

Zeehond and tjagain my guy is on 0845 136 7765. The unit I got is fully reconditioned ( it looks new)
I believe that it is the insulated model, it has to be earthed back to the bus bar. It is slightly different than mine, the solonoid is still internal, there are the two heavy duty terminals like mine but only one ( the positive) terminal to the internal solonoid. It has 13 teeth and holes for 3 bolts.
It is buried beath a lot of gear in the car but I will try to photo it and get the full serial number tomorrow if you wish.
My guy is just a back street auto electrician but straight and cheap so by all means call him.
Regards Peter.
