We have a Van de Stadt Seal, 36ft. Sailing boat with a Perkins 4108 auxiliary. The boat is currently out of the water in Sicily from where we have just returned having done some maintenance. The last thing I did was to try to remove the starter motor so that I could record the Identification numbers on it so that I might begin a search for a spare.Sure enough I hurt my back tfying to undo the bottom bolt securing it and failed to obtain my Id. I could however measure its length (175mm) , not its Diameter. It has 2 cables going to it ,one a Positive from a solenoid located on a nearby bulkhead, the other a Negative from the Battery. I under stand that this is because we have a steel boat and the earth is Isolated, necessitating isolation from the hull. The starter is a 2 bolt securing type and is currently behaving magnificently. Does any one else have such a starter and are spares available?Any help would be most welcome.

I had such a beast on my 4-99 and also on present 4107 .... engineer told me they were same .... but I also know that there are possibly 2 types that can be fitted. Maybe thats based on the various uses Perkins engines were used for .... vans / buses + marine.

Its worth getting a copy of the Moteren site of the Workshop manual - from that you should be able to id which you have ...

I have a perkins 4108m in my boat which has a pre-engaged starter with a 3 hole fixing (although it only had 2 bolts holding it in), which I removed for the same purpose. I took it to a lucas dealer who told me it was a LRS 189/13 instead of the usual LRS189 on account of the drive having 13 teeth instead of the normal 10, I was quoted £180+ vat for a exchange unit.

Hi,
I have a Perkins 4108, interested in the manual. Clicked your link ok and clicked union jack for English, but the download is in German, any way it can be in English.
Thanks
Mike

Go into your local LSUK and ask them. There are different starters used on the 4108 - standard teeth is 12. Lucas can supply alternatives and either fully insulated or chassis return. I was in My local LSUK yesterday for a new regulator and asked them about the starter motor having read your original post. In addition my local LSUK were against buying a replacement as they are very rubust units, rather they suggested bringing it in to them for overhaul - much cheaper than a new unit.
