Perkins 4108 diesel leak

Any help appreciated please, I have a diesel leak from the fuel injector pump throttle spindle. It drips when the engine is running, it doesn't seem to affect performance etc. - do I have to remove the pump for servicing? (the flange setcrew close to the engine looks like a gynaecologists tool job to undo! ) Or can I repair the spindle seal in situ? Boats in Spain.

Re: Perkins 4108 diesel leak

Yes it can be replaced in situ, you have to remove the throtle arm and then the top of the pump, (two bolts/nuts) lifting and pushing spindle back down, at this point the desiel in the pump will run out (about half a pint) depending on witch pump you have the rubber `O` ring (s) will be on the shaft or the raised tower on the body of the pump. Any motor factor should do the O rings but make sure the shaft and the body have not got to much ware or it will only be a temperary fix.
the gaskets delicate to. If you have the very early pump as you lift the body look at the fork that sits on the rack, make sure it goes back the same or it wont rev up.

two or four bols/nuts , depending on pump type. Was in rush to get down the boat on friday, relized my mistake on the A3. only just got back.
Good Luck

spot on, used to work in the oil industry in africa and middle east, all the lincoln welding sets were 4108 engined and the drip from the throttle was something we accepted in the end.

Many thanks lads I did cure this leak grateful for the confidence imparted by paddywackcocker and Stu. Willing to pass on "the knowledge" if required by anybody. Gynaecology is a useful skill if attempting this one.
