Perkins 4108 cooling system

I have just taken a punt on a second hand indirectly cooled 4108 from EBay and picked it up earlier today. My plan is to give it an oil change, compression test and a good clean and paint if all okay.

The problem I have is that I cannot see where the raw water pump has been mounted, as my old engine has it mounted on the front of the timing cover yet looking at the front of this engine the timing cover has no hole or mounting point. Were these ever fitted with some other raw pump that would have been mounted anywhere else?
 
Assuming your previous lump was a 4108 then the raw water pump on the marine diesel was mounted top right of the timing cover as is in this link to some dudes website, scroll down for the pic http://ckdboats.blogspot.co.uk/2011/08/marine-engine-heat-exchanger-water-pump.html it looks like you may have a road going engine which has been marinised and by the looks of things had a remotely mounted jabsco or similar, probably to a bracket on the engine mount somehow, can you not contact the seller who you bought it off and ask this ??

After thought ... some raw water pumps were directly mounted to the front of the crank pulley, driven by said pulley and locked into place by a small bracket to stop them spinning when the crank rotates.

I will do but he is on holiday just now.

The original engine although a 4108 I think it was an earlier version with the transversely mounted heat exchanger mounted to the front rather than the side of the engine.

As previously said, the Jabsco pump is usually fitted at the top of the timing cover. It's driven by a simple dog drive plate bolted to the end of the camshaft. Kits are I believe are still available from engine marinisation outfits and it's a simple job to do, just needs careful alignment.

I have had a closer look and it seems that the raw water pump has indeed been attached and driven by the crank pulley. The question is should I source and fit crank driven pump or fit a replacement to the timing cover bearing in mind I will also have to source a timing cover with a hole to accept it?
 
They don't make timing covers with holes . you have to cut a hole in your existing cover with a tank cutter. The marinization kit includes a reinforcing/mounting ring that's bolted around the hole in the cover, this has to be carefully aligned to the camshaft.

The pump is driven from the injector drive shaft, there is a tapered drive that presses in to a hole in the pump drive hub. not all engines have this hole so if you want to go down that route check the engine has it first.

That's the problem there is no aperture on this engine and I am swithering as to try and source a used timing cover with the hole or buy a pulley driven pump that fits onto the crank. I have located a pulley driven Jabsco pump on EBay in the states for about £160 delivered (not sure about customs charges) but they don't seem to be available over here.

This is the type of pump which is fitted direct to the crankshaft.

I had the same problem when converting my Ford 1.6 Escort Diesel as there was no facility to mount a sea water pump and I did not fancy spending £250 on a crankshaft pump. I did however have a pulley driven Jabsco so made a small bracket to mount the pump and doubled the engine cooling pulley so i could drive the sea water pump.

Perhaps the way forward is to cannibalise your existing engine and fit the parts (such as the timing chain cover) to your new engine but this may be more difficult than it sounds as there may not be a drive dog on the injector drive shaft.

You might find that the US pump will cost a further 50% to get it here, Have a look on my other post.

You have to remove the front pulley and the tin cover to get at the timing gears in order to see if the hub has the hole machined in, road engines do not normally have the hole.
No point buying the parts and cutting a hole in the timing cover if you have no way of driving it.
If you contact Diperk with your engine no (near to injector pump flange) they should be able to tell you what engine it is.
I may have a spare Jabsco drive hub somewhere but there are several different types and fitting it means removing injector pump and re-setting the engine timing.

I think I would go for a belt or pulley driven pump..

You might want to swap out that blasted rear crankshaft oil seal while the engine is out and easily worked on...
