I have just bought a boat with a 1973 Perkins 4107 and urgently need either a solenoid or a recon starter motor - I live in Kent. Anyone know a good supplier of spares for these old engines? Also the starter motor I have is mounted on the rear of the conversion plate and thus hangs over the gearbox, is this normal for this engine?

Had twin 4108 Perkins in my last boat, they will run forever if looked after.
Agree with others go to a re-wind or diesel repair outfit they will help or tell you where can get your starter fixed.
Parts for 4107 are same or similar to 4108 and you can always find them.
You may have enfield leg, parts are also available but shop around.

As said , almost every autoelectrical place can repair/ rewind your starter and if its totaly goosed then Lucus (LSUK) will sell you a brand new one, generaly off the shelf. We had ours rewound/converted from 12v to 24v for 160 squids.

Have a 4108, have found Golden Arrow Marine very helpfull when I needed a new water pump.
Ring Lee on 023 8071 0371
I have no connection with them other than a satisfied customer.

You go to local or nearest Car Scrap yard who does parts of shelf ... show him the bits - he'll probably say ... thats a Doo Dah day starter motor from a xxxx van - here's one here and for a solenoid - well most any will do.

The Perkins 4-107 is a common utility / van engine and most scrappers have bits for them. The 4-99 and 4-108 engines have quite a few common bits as well ... depending on set-up.

Thanks everyone, my starter motor does seem a bit odd as it hangs over the gearbox and therefore turns in the opposite direction to usual. When I first looked I thought the thing had dropped off as it wasn't in the usual place!
Wil try this place in Chatham, thanks
